Dr. William Joseph Garrett, a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and retired pastor of Grace Apostolic Church of Joplin, passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at the age of 83. He was a model citizen in the city of Joplin.
William J. Garrett was born October 19, 1928, in the small community of Miller Grove, near the town of Sulphur Springs, Texas. In 1943, his family moved to Orange, Texas where his father worked in a shipyard during W.W. II. William attended Orange High School, where he excelled in sports. He ran track, setting many district records on the 440 relay team. He also played football, becoming a star tackle, and team captain for the Orange, Bengal Tigers.
While attending Orange High School, he met the love of his life, Mickey Chatellier. Upon graduating in 1946, he turned down a scholarship to play collegiate football at Stephan F. Austin University, and joined the United States Marine Corp., where he became “Honor Man†and expert rifleman. He received his honorable discharge from the Marine Corp in 1948.
On September 17th 1948, William married his high school sweetheart (Mickey). Four children were born to this union, Debby, Jill, Gary, and Mickey.
On May 8th 1950, he was baptized, and converted to the Apostolic faith. He accepted his call to the ministry in 1951. His formal ministerial training came under the direction of the United Pentecostal Church International, of St. Louis, MO. In 1952 he received a local Ministerial License. In 1953 he received a General License. He evangelized in 1954, and in 1957 he was officially ordained by the United Pentecostal Church International, during a District Conference held in St. Louis, MO.
Dr. Garrett’s first pastorate was in Boling, Texas in 1955. His second pastorate was in Del Rio, Texas 1956. Mother’s Day, 1957, marked the beginning of his third pastorate, at the United Pentecostal Church, located at 1501 Pearl Street, Joplin. In 1965, he incorporated the church, and changed its name to, Joplin Apostolic Church. In 1966, construction was begun on a new church facility located at 2601 Connecticut Ave., in Joplin. In 1967, dedication services at the new facility was celebrated.
During the 1960’s as a member of the United Pentecostal Church International, Dr. Garrett served as Presbyter over Section #6 of the Missouri District. In 1968, he became a charter member of a new ministerial alliance called the (A.M.F.) Apostolic Ministers Fellowship. With the (A.M.F.) he served as a member of the Foreign Missions Board of Directors, and as Vice Chairman of the General Council of Elders. In 1975, he was elected to serve the first of two terms as the General Chairman of the General Council of Elders. His second term began in 1978. Dr. Garrett was a highly esteemed & sought after Bible Teacher! Having traveled extensively throughout the United States, preaching the gospel in over 200 special events. In 2001, and 2008 the City of Joplin proclaimed “Dr. William J. Garrett Day†in his honor.
In 2001, his biography was written and published by his son, Dr. Gary W. Garrett, entitled, “A Portrait of Courageâ€. In 2001, he was inducted into the Apostolic Ministerial Hall of Fame. In 2008, he received the Dr. of Theology degree.
In 2001, Dr. Garrett celebrated 50 years of ministerial excellence. In 2005, he celebrated 50 years of pastoral excellence. In 2008, he celebrated 50 years as Senior Pastor of Grace Apostolic Church of Joplin.
